Are filmmakers born or made? Or both?
This is probably one of the most controversial questions in the history of filmmaking. Are filmmakers born or made? Here are my thoughts.
To answer the question straight forward, I think it’s definitely a mixture of both. Usually, filmmakers are people who were born with some sort of creative drive to do things. I consider my younger self probably accounted to that. When I was 4 and 5 years old, I was OBSESSED with fish, sharks, the ocean, and drawing. I combined those two things, by drawing fish, sharks, whales, etc. I was pretty into it. I even somehow managed to beg out a small aquarium for my room, with Guppy fish & a small catfish who was my favorite. Lots of filmmakers, when they are born, fall in love with movies. Lots of others fall in love with other creative mediums and forms. In this case, for me it was some marine biology and drawing/painting. So that continued for a while, then my family and I moved to America, where I all of the sudden lost my interest in both of those mediums. I was out and about, playing with my friends outside, causing lots of trouble, having fun, etc. However, I still had that creative drive to explore something. Even when I was playing with my friends, we still thought up of creative things to do, like these epic bike stunts, and how to ding dong ditch someone multiple times. I think this is where limitations come in as an advantage. People who are rich have everything they need and much more that they don’t need. That practically eliminates the drive to explore any creative field. Why should they, when they have everything? If they can simply ask for an expensive camera, and get it the next day? They don't have to work for it. For the longest time I hated my limitations, but now I am so thankful I have them. They allow me to have this drive for filmmaking and creativity, that I wouldn’t have if I had everything that I needed and a lot more that I didn't. Why am I telling you all this stuff about limitations? Because limitations make artists.
So in the end – filmmakers and any artists of any medium are born with an eye for things – sometimes it comes in a bit later, sometimes a bit early. However, we are born with a very small and un-developed discerned eye, and we must develop it to unleash our insane creativity through our work. Some people, however, are not born with that magical eye, but if they love something really much, they can develop it from scratch. That’s really all there is – some people are born with a starter magic eye that they can build up on, which is what most artists are born with. Some, however, are born with nothing in that sense, but they end up loving something so much, they develop one and they don’t even know it.
In the end, I feel like I was defiantly born with some (but very little) creative sense, so I had something to build upon. Limitations also helped – they helped my drive for things, especially filmmaking.
Do you think filmmakers are born or made? Were you born with the creative sense or did you develop it from scratch? Do you agree with my thoughts and opinions? Leave a comment, or you can tweet me @IlyaMTweets!
